The beautiful coil style of basket weaving has been done for generations passed down largely from mother to daughter, who then passed the technique down to their daughters. The process once entirely used grasses and palm fronds. However, the technic has evolved and the craftspeople replaced binding the pieces with palm fronds and now use colorful ribbons made with recycled plastics. Not only did the update allow for greater color bursts, but it eased the hand pain that many women experienced in weaving with fronds.
